¹God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; Selah.

²That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.

³Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee.

⁴O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Selah.

Hebrew definition

God, gods, or beings described with divine language. The noun has plural form, but its agreement and setting can identify the one God. The creation account uses singular verbal agreement. The plural shape should not by itself be read as naming several creators.

Meaning in this verse

In “God be merciful unto us, and bless us”, “God” expresses god; also gods or divine beings in other constructions. The surrounding poetic lines identify the speaker, addressee, and intended comparison. A figurative sense in one psalm should not be imposed on every occurrence elsewhere.
