Bible names and places

Identify the person or place in the particular passage. Similar names, spelling variants, and people who share a name need careful comparison.

People: distinguish the person in the passage

The Word Focus panel can identify a person, give name information and pronunciation, and point to relevant KJV references. People who share an English name must be distinguished by their role and immediate setting.

Places: compare KJV spelling and context

Deuteronomy 2:23 KJV

And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

Azzah is the KJV form used here for Gaza. Compare the references below; a spelling variation does not by itself indicate a separate place.

Names, meanings and uncertainty

A name’s proposed meaning is different from identifying who or what it refers to in the verse. Scripture may explain a naming directly, as in Exodus 2:10. Elsewhere an etymology or geographical identification may require further evidence.

Search exact spellings separately, then compare the relevant passages. Avoid assuming that every shared name identifies one person or that every proposed name meaning is certain.
